Different Family Cultures Around The World

Different family cultures around the world are mainly separated into Western and Eastern cultures. The main difference is in their parenting and values.

Family is important no matter where you go or what languages you speak.

Family culture is defined as the shared meaning and expectations for behavior that emerge with the experience of being a member of a family. This included the norms and shared experiences of a family who live together.

The culture of the family can also transfer across many generations. Many people around the world follow different types of cultures and traditions around the world.

The same thing in one culture is good and for another may be considered bad. Not only around the world but culture varies within the country as well. 

For many people, most of their time besides work is spent with their families. 

So, in this article, we have talked about the cultural differences in every society and country and the tradition followed by people in their way. 

1. Family Values in American Culture

Different family cultures around the world differ due to the religions and traditions they follow. In America, family values are a lot more unique than others.

Family values are similar to work values and personal values but they include the whole family. These values teach you how to deal with challenges and unwanted situations as a unit.

Often, family values transfer from one generation to another. Even if the values are not correctly fit for the other generation these are not questioned.

America is a diverse country as it possesses people from different races, cultures, and creeds. In fact, it is a country famous for immigrants, as various people from all over the world have come and settled down in the country. 

As per the survey, the US is the third largest country in the world with residents reflecting different ethnic groups. These ethnic groups include African Americans, Indigenous Americans, Latin Americans, and Asian Americans. Now, get to know more about the cultural values of America. 

American culture is a part of the Western family culture. Western world represents countries like United States, Canda, Germany, Austria, Finland, Australia, France, and Spain majorly.

  • Traditional Values

To a wide range of families, certain aspects of traditional ideals may still be important and also they may apply in their life as well.

Here, are a list of the classical values:

  • Being loyal to the same person for a lifetime.
  • Respecting the authority that one possesses.
  • Having faith and trust in god and also worshiping them.
  • Being responsible for one's actions.
  • For women believing in traditional home-based roles.
  • Father is considered the head of the family.
  • Opposition to pre-marital sex and same-sex marriage.
  • Love for the elder one was always combined with fear.
  • The smaller ones should respect and love the elder ones and vice versa.
  • Modern Values

As time passes the aspects regarding values also change. People slowly change the meaning of values as per their easiness.

The following are some of the values of America's modern families:

  • Have trust in government-funded financial aid to families.
  • Support for freedom of religion.
  • Developing greater skills in communicating one's feelings.
  • Respecting people for themselves.
  • To improve livelihood they start supporting the universal living wage model.

Negative Aspects of American Families

Along with the positive ones, the American families also have negative aspects.

a. Independence

Americans are taught to be self-sufficient and independent from a young age. At the age of 18 children are expected to move out.

They are very individualistic and as such prioritize taking care of themselves first. Plus, they also prioritize the freedom to pursue their private happiness above all else. Here, the importance of people being able to make their own choices can take their decisions highly valued.

b. Equality

For Americans, no one is superior to the other and equality refers to being born equal.

Everyone in the country has equal rights in everything. They have the right to perform the tasks and be treated equally by everyone.

c. Individualism

Cultures in America place a great deal of importance on individualism similar to valuing and respecting independence. 

Generally, individualism is known as being self-sufficient. This means people are free to pursue their goals on their own terms and policies.

2. Family Values In Asian Culture

Eastern family culture and religion are denoted majorly by Chinese population. China is the major part of East Asia.

Asians tend to be highly group-oriented, giving more importance to family values and relationships.

Eastern religions which are spread throughout the world include Buddism or Hinduism and the use of Chinese characters, and the fusion of cuisines, and traditions among others.

The family structures in this culture are joined one including all the family from different generations and relatives. In the traditional Asian family, parents create rules and regulations for their kids and they have to strictly follow ie and respect them.

Some of the rules they conduct are:

  • If one has something important to say then only speak.
  • Do respect for the elder ones and love the younger ones.
  • To the family or one's self one never brings dishonor.
  • In the family, females are expected to be passive and disciplined and take responsibility for the household work.

Gestures, body language, eye contact, word stress, and the use of silence matter in Asian cultures.

Asians are typically more polite in social settings and encounters while Americans are more forthright and forward, meaning they are more comfortable talking directly.

3. Family Cultures In Other Countries

Apart from American and Chinese, there are many other countries divided on the basis of regions. Family cultures also vary by these regions.

East Asian family culture has developed many traditions and themes. In different places of the country, they follow unique family traditions and some of them are:

I. Central Asian Culture

Many ethnic groups characterized by different languages and historical modes are considered in central asian culture.

For ethnic grouping, they have divided populations into six ethnic groups Kazakh, Tajik, Turkmen, Kyrgyz, Uzbek, and Karakalpak.

Since every central asian country is mostly Muslim here Islamic culture is more.

II. Eastern Asian Culture

The East Asian culture also known as Confucian culture, finds in communities that use chopsticks like China, Japan, Koreans, Vietnam, and many more.

The major culture followed in these countries is Chinese Folk religion, Taoism, Korean Shamanism, Shinto, and many more.

III. North Asian Culture

North Asian is a part of Russia. It consists of three Russian regions east of the Ural Mountains: Ural, Siberia, and the Russian Far East.

The persuasions of North Asia include Buddhism and Taoism.

IV. South Asian Culture

South Asia culture is completely conjoined in ethnicity, language, and religion and is one of the most diverse parts of the world.

Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, and Sikhism are the major religions of this place.

The major countries here are India, Nepal, Pakistan, Bhutan, Maldives and Sri Lanka.

V. Southeast Asian Culture

Southeast Asia is known for an array of things ranging from history, culture, and cuisine, and even for having good flight connections.

The nations include Indonesia, Philippines, Cambodia, and Malaysia among others

However, each of the countries within the region has its own diverse set of religions, languages, and cultures as a whole. From Buddhism to Christianity to Islam, many faiths can be seen practiced here.

VI. Western Asian Culture

Western Asia includes the Arabian Peninsula, Iran, Mesopotamia, and others. Four major religious groups in this region are Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and Druze.

Difference Between Eastern and Western Cultures

It is important to know about the cultural differences between Eastern and Western countries.

Countries including Canada, the U.S., New Zealand, and Australia are known to be Western countries while others like India, China, Nepal, Bhutan, and Srilanka are said to be the eastern ones.

  • Eastern culture is also said to be oriental or communalistic culture whereas Western is said to be individualistic or independent culture.

  • In Eastern culture, older people are considered to be more respectful while in Western all people are considered to be equal.

  • Western people are highly task-oriented whereas Eastern people spend more time with their loved ones.

  • Eastern people may subtly express their emotions at the same time Western people express their emotions openly and directly.

  • The Westerners are independent and perform their tasks by themselves on the other hand generally the Eastern people depend on others.

  • In Western culture ethics are strictly based on law and in Eastern culture ethics are based on honor and shame.
